Getting more powerful The Toyota Motor Corp.'s Scion brand unleashed more powerful product lines not by featuring the EBC Greenstuff but through more potent engines. The brand launched the second-generation xB at the Chicago Auto Show. The car is made to be boxy cool, compact and high-performing as compared to its ancestor. The secret spice? The 2.4-liter engine that replaced the previous 1.5-liter unit.

Would the alterations spoil Scion's success? Steve Haag, the Scion corporate manager, said no. "The all-new xB was designed with the help of our passionate owner body. No other automotive company listens to their customers like we do. Our xB owners wanted a larger vehicle with a more powerful engine," he declares.

The Japanese automaker also replaced the xA hatchback with the new xD, also slightly larger and more powerful than its predecessor with a 1.8-liter engine. All Scion models for 2008 received the new Scion family front design which has been described by Haag as a "menacing horizontal combination of headlights and grille."

Additionally, standard equipment and safety features have been expanded, and the list of available accessories is even longer than before. What does not change, said Haag, is "a strategy to keep our models surprising, versatile, exclusive and personalization-friendly."

Rear-wheel drive spice When Hyundai announced its plan to set forth a rear-wheel drive revolution, few took it seriously. But not until the Genesis Concept was introduced at the much-concluded New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Genesis, the midsize, rear-wheel drive sedan, is a disguised prototype for an upcoming model. The vehicle is designed to compete with the Infiniti G-series, Lexus IS and even the GS models.

"Genesis will allow us to speak to driving enthusiasts and showcase our engineering," Johnson said. "Until Genesis, Hyundai had never had a car on the cover of Motor Trend," said Hyundai Motor America spokesman Miles Johnson.

Johnson added that the Genesis marketing strategy will give Hyundai something that Toyota and Honda franchises do not offer: a rear-wheel drive luxury/sport model. He pointed out, though, that the Genesis marks an expansion rather than sea change for the brand. "We're not walking away from Accent and Elantra," he said. The Genesis will showcase the automaker's new 300-plus horsepower V-8 and also offer a V-6 model priced under $30,000.

Kia and its Soul Kia, the Korean automaker, introduced its Soul Concept, a small crossover utility vehicle. Kia Motors America Marketing VP Ian Beavis described the Soul as a "halo model," a term not usually connected with low-priced vehicles. Halo, in this sense, means the Soul conveys the essence of the brand in a volume model.

Conceding the present product lines of the automaker have rather blend-in styling, Beavis said that the Soul kicks off a new era in expressive design for Kia while maintaining the brand's value story. The boxy Soul, powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, enters the market dominated by the Scion xB, Chevrolet HHR and the Honda Element. The production version of the Soul is due for 2008.

Asked how the Soul fits the brand's "Exciting and Enabling" credo, Beavis said, "Exciting doesn't necessarily mean the biggest engine on the block." The value, he added, will enable buyers to enjoy their lifestyles with this vehicle.

All-new Mercedes C-Class Mirrors Dealers Whims Robert Allan, the product manager for the third-generation 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class which is due this summer, said that this car reflects far more input from Mercedes dealers than any of its predecessors did.

The all-new 2008 C-Class will offer a separate Sport model series, clearly delineated by design, feature content, and handling performance. The 2008 C-Class Sport models wear the brand's 'coupe' front end styling, which flaunts a simpler grille with big star emblem in place of the C-Class Luxury models' conventional Mercedes grille and hood ornament.

The differences from its predecessor are more than skin deep. Allan noted that the Sport models get special suspension tuning and wheels, AMG exterior styling and unique interiors. Meanwhile, dealers asked and received expanded standard equipment, simplified ordering and option packages, and the 4MATIC option on both the C300 Sport and Luxury models.

Audi's True Coupe Audi has not marketed a coupe in the United States since after the 1991 model year, so the A5 coming for 2008 etch a remarkable change in strategy for the brand. The company spokesman Chris Bokich said that the A5 coupe, while sharing mechanical elements with other Audi models, is a separate model series, not a variation on another body style as its previous coupes had been. The A5 also exudes the automaker's vehicle construction flexibility.

"The A5 is indicative of what is to come on future Audi models, both in terms of extroverted exterior and interior design, as well as technically regarding the modular-structure technology," said Bokich. "We have moved away from platforms and are now mixing and matching skeletal underbody components that can efficiently produce vehicles of differing length, width, and height."

Linking the Past to the Future Maserati gets back to its roots with the 2008 GranTurismo coupe. Though the previous Maserati coupe evoked a few classic brand design elements, the new GranTurismo pulls more attributes from the rich and varied heritage of the automaker for inspiration. The grille is pure 1950s-era Maserati racecar, and the long-hood proportions evoke the legendary Maserati front-engine GT coupes of the 1950s and 1960s.

"The GranTurismo is a true Maserati at first glance. It has already garnered global admiration and we are proud to now bring it to North America," said James Selwa, the President and CEO of Maserati North America. The new model also builds on a successful brand strategy. "Maserati has become a competitive, credible choice in the $100,000 plus range, no small feat given the strong field of competitors in our segment," Selwa added.

What the future brings Infiniti also flaunted a concept vehicle at the New York Auto Show - the EX. The company spokesman Kyle Bazemore said that the EX Concept is "about 85 percent" true to the production EX35 model due late this year.

Smaller than the current FX crossover utility vehicle, the EX does not replace it. Bazemore expects the EX's coupe-like styling to attract new customers to the brand. The EX35 rivals the BMW X3 and the Acura RDX. Cutting-edge technologies introduced include the Around View Monitor (AVM) camera system that reduces blind spots, and the Lane Departure Warning System. Infiniti will introduce another world technology first at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Tyres are one of the most important components on a car. They determine the grip and road holding of the vehicle. You shouldn't wait until a tire is completely worn out before changing it. It is the freshness and how much tread is on the tire that determines how well it will perform. Why tyres have grooves

Grooves or treads found on tyres are there to improve grip on wet road surfaces. Without these grooves water would be unable to escape from the sides of the wheel as it presses down on the road. This would cause a layer of water to remain between the tyre and the road causing loss of friction with the road surface. This is known as hydroplaning. No grip = big problems.

Letters, numbers and speed ratings

Lets look at a tyre with this combination of numbers a letters p215/35 r18 84w

1. P stands for passenger car

2. The first number "215" is the tyre width in millimetres.

3. The second number 35 is the aspect ratio, the ratio of the sidewall height (profile) to width. In this example the ratio is 35 so the sidewall height is 35% of the width.

4. The fourth part r18 stands for radial construction, and refers to the wheels diameter in inches that the tyre is mounted onto. So this tyre can be mounted onto an 18inch wheel.

5. And last but not least the speed ratings. The code refers to the maximum speed a tyre can travel safely. So the higher up the letter is in the alphabet the faster the wheel can go. In our example it is rated at w so it can travel at 168mph before it is unsafe to go any faster. The code is shown below.

Honda unveiled its Honda FCX

Honda Motor Co. has finally unveiled its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle last Thursday with the announcement that it would begin producing a small number of vehicles that will be marketed in Japan and United States.

The new Honda FCX is made more sporty and sleeker as compared to the current version that has a top speed of 100 mph. It also has a longer range from 210 miles to 270 miles and of course a fuel cell power system that is 400 pounds lighter. Its auto parts such as air induction and others were also modified to function on hydrogen fuel.

The introduction of the FCX was right on timing since there is a growing concern for the greenhouse gas emissions not to mention the calls in Congress to dramatically raise fuel economy standards to minimize exhaust emissions.

Hydrogen vehicles provide lower net carbon dioxide emissions. Plus it can help end US dependency on foreign oil. Sadly this is easier said than done. The expenses that comes with building hydrogen fuel cells not to mention the absence of hydrogen fueling stations around the country creates a major obstruction for the fulfillment of this goal.

But thanks to companies like Honda which is at present is looking at an experimental home energy station that is making use of natural gas supplied to most homes to produce hydrogen fuel, hot water, heat, and electricity. According to Ben Knight, Honda's vice president for research in the Americas, the best thing about hydrogen is that it can be extracted from a broad range of sources that includes methane or natural gas, bio-mass and renewable sources like solar or wind.

He further added that the next generation FCX is a "quantum leap forward". The FCX will also be given a much higher price tag at least $500 more totaling to only a fraction of the approximate $1.5 million production cost of each Hydrogen fuel celled Honda.

Honda has already sold 30 units of their eco-friendly car worldwide. Mr. Knight also said that the production of the FCX model would eventually surpass the current fleet. Just to give customers a taste of what the FCX has to offer Honda has leased one to a family in California two years ago and last March another FCX was leased to a 17-year-old actress and environmental activist Q'orianka Kilcher. Honda has also allowed journalists to test drive two of its FCX. In addition government officials including top White House environmental adviser James COnnaughton were also invited to test drive Honda's FCX.

The FCX when accelerating gives off a sound similar to a jet engine rather than a conventional gasoline engine. It is also has superior acceleration as compared to the current model that has a top speed of only 100 mph. Honda has also assured that the production vehicle will be similar to the concept showed last Thursday complete with the upgraded bumpers and revised interior.

Honda is not the only automaker that is conducting research on hydrogen vehicles; most major carmakers have spent billions on research alone. China is also investing heavily in hydrogen and if everything goes well for them they may even become the first country to adopt hydrogen vehicles in large volume.

It can be remembered that General Motors has said that it would introduce the world's largest fleet of hydrogen-powered Chevrolte Equinox SUVs by means of its "Project Driveway" program in New York, Washington, DC, and California. And next week GM has scheduled a tour to take journalists on a 300-mile drive from its labs in Honeoye Falls, N.Y. to Tarrytown, N.Y., to update them on the progress of its hydrogen research. GM is hoping to build a 1000 vehicle fleet between 2010 and 2012.

Ford Motor Co. is also working on its plug-in electric hydrogen-powered vehicle with a range of 225 miles which will be called HySEries Edge. In addition Ford will have a fleet of hydrogen powered E-450 shuttle buses aside from hydrogen vehicles. DaimlerChrysler for its part will also be producing 100 hydrogen fuel cells to be distributed worldwide and that includes the 25 units destined for California. BMW will also be producing its own 100 Hydrogen 7 vehicles and plans to be leasing them next year.

Replacing a Flat Tire

The experience of getting a flat tire seemingly happens to people at the worst possible time and place. While inconvenient, replacing a flat tire is one of the simplest responsibilities related to vehicle care. In fact, the need to change a tire is so common that all of the required equipment is conveniently included when you purchase a vehicle. Since most people experience a flat tire sometime in their driving career, the ability to change a tire is a valuable skill.

If a tire goes flat while you are driving, pull over immediately and park the car on level ground. Always engage the parking brake, and put the car into gear if it is a manual transmission. If you are close to moving traffic, turn on your vehicle's hazard lights to warn other drivers to be cautious. If you have wheel chocks, which are wedges intended to keep a car from rolling, place them behind or in front of the tires (depending on the direction of incline where the car is parked). Rocks are a good alternative to use if you do not have wedges.

Next, locate the spare tire, jack, and lug wrench. All three of these items are secured in the trunks of most vehicles. Remove the hubcap on the flat tire if it has one. Before jacking the car, you should loosen each lug nut holding the wheel in place. To loosen the lug nuts, place one end of the lug wrench over a nut and turn counterclockwise a little. It is recommended to follow a star pattern when loosening lug nuts, always loosening the lug nut across from the previous one. Continue until all lug nuts are loosened slightly.

Now it is time to elevate the vehicle. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for the recommended location on the vehicle to apply the jack. Since the entire weight of the vehicle will be resting on a small mechanism, it is extremely important to use caution and to place the jack in the appropriate place. Raise the car slightly higher than required to remove the flat tire, leaving space for the full spare tire to be attached.

Once the vehicle is securely lifted, remove the lug nuts completely using the lug wrench. Make sure to set the lug nuts aside in a safe location where they will not roll or otherwise get lost. Remove the flat tire by it pulling straight out, and replace with the spare tire, ensuring that the valve is facing outward.

Finally, tighten the lug nuts using the same star pattern as you used to remove them, concentrating on the nut opposite the last. The technique here is not tightening two neighboring lug nuts all the way consecutively. Carefully lower the jack and return it to the trunk. Replace the hubcap if you can, and do not forget to remove the wheel chock or rock before driving away.

Spare tires typically have limitations on speed and distance, so be sure to check and adhere to these requirements. Have the original tire checked by a tire specialist, who can determine whether it can be repaired or requires replacement.

The announcement came after Jonathan D. Rich announced that he will be leaving the company to pursue other leadership options.

Goodyear announced that they have chosen Richard J. Kramer to be the resident of the outfit effective immediately. Kramer holds the position as the executive vice president and the Chief Financial Officer of North America Tire. Kramer will continue his duties as the unit's CFO until the company names a replacement for him.

Richard Kramer joined the company in March of 2002 and was elected as the Vice President for Corporate Finance of the company. In July of the same year, he was made the Vice President of Finance for the North American Tire unit. After these, he was promoted to Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning and Restructuring for the unit in August of 2003.

His rise to the top is once again made evident in May of 2004 when he became the Chief Financial Officer of the North American Tire business. Kramer came from Cleveland and he also holds a bachelor's degree in science and business administration which he received from John Carroll University in the year 1986. Before his stint in Goodyear, Kramer spent 13 years working for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Anderson also filed a class-action suit in 2005 against Toyota, Bridgestone and Dunlop over run-flats used on the 2004-6 Sienna with all-wheel drive.

The suit filed on Monday is over the Michelin Energy LX4 PAX run-flat which was used on the 2005-7 Honda Odyssey Touring and as an option on the 2006-7 Acura RL. The suit does not disagree that the tires offer a safety advantage however it alleges that purchasers were deceived about replacement costs and repairs.

Michelin stores or car dealers must have special tire-changing equipment that can cost $3,000 to $15,000 depending on what the dealer already has, Chris Naughton, a Honda spokesman, said in an interview before the suit was filed. He said some dealers did not have the equipment yet, but that about 90 percent of Honda's roughly 1,000 dealers would have it by the end of this month. He added the company had not seen the suit, but that the tire was a "great product that provides convenience, added safety and peace of mind for our customers."

Lynn Mann, a Michelin spokeswoman, said the suit had "many misstatements and errors."

Clarence M. Ditlow, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, said that the court statements from Dunlop and Bridgestone engineers showed "the first-generation run-flat tires for the Sienna were poorly designed and wore out prematurely." "Whether it is tires or cars, consumers are well advised to avoid new models because they are prone to bugs," he said.

Goodyear: A Go For Lighter Load

Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT), a renowned tire manufacturing giant, signed an agreement to sell its engineered-products business for $1.475 billion to EPD, Inc. which is an entity sponsored by the private equity firm Carlyle Partners IV, L.P. The move is the latest effort of the Akron tire maker to recover from its heavy pecuniary losses after struggling to improve production. The investors acquired the Goodyear shares on March 26.

The tire and rubber company's engineered-products business consists of 32 facilities and 6,500 people who make products such as conveyor belts, hoses, and air springs for customers in the automotive, industrial, military, consumer and other related sectors. The company's tires are known for their compatibility with EBC brake pads and other car parts. Goodyear expects to record increase in sales and profits of this business to Carlyle, but the amount has not yet been divulged. The transaction remains subject to post-closing conditions and adjustments. Additionally, it is also subject to EPD's completion of a labor agreement with the United Steelworkers union.

"This transaction reinforces our focus on our core consumer and commercial tire businesses and on improving our balance sheet," said the company's CEO, Robert J. Keegan, in a press release dated March 23. Keegan is expecting to use the money for things like debt reduction and growing the tire business. Goodyear will announce the specific details later.

Goodyear had to pay roughly $451 million in debt interest expense during 2006. The amount is a little more than a third of its operating income. Analysts in the industry said that consummating a sale transaction to chip away debt make sense. "If the company used all the proceeds [from its agreement with Carlyle] for debt reduction, we think the transaction would be accretive to EPS," Standard & Poor's equity analyst Efraim Levy said in a research note.

Levy added that the deal could grow Goodyear's earnings per share by sparing the company from interest expense. Citing this as well as expected savings from recent changes in the company's pension plan, S&P upgraded Goodyear's stock to hold from sell. Levy is not the only one on that stand. On March 26, investors bid up the stock 5.3 percent to $31.88 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Goodyear, which has became famous worldwide because of its blimp, has taken other steps to recover from its difficulties. In late December, the company managed to end a strike that had started Oct. 5, for example. Goodyear hammered out a three-year pact with the United Steelworkers, in which Goodyear will take steps like closing its Tyler, Texas, plant while moving responsibility for its union retirees' health care to a $1 billion trust.

The transaction is expected to save the company $70 million this year, $240 million in 2008 and $300 million in 2009. But the company lost $358 million during the three months ended Dec. 31, including items like the recently ended strike, compared to a net loss of $51 million during the same period of 2005.

In the interim, Goodyear continues to battle with challenges like improving its global production. CEO Keegan, who took over from Samir Gibara in early 2003, has been steering the company through a slump in the domestic auto industry. Only time can tell how long the road remains bumpy for the distressed company.

The Saab BioPower 100 Concept is aboard the 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine from the Saab 9-5 SportCombi models, developing 150 hp. When running on E100, the Saab BioPower 100 Concept delivers a maximum output of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm and a peak torque of 295 lb.-ft. rotating between engine speeds of 3,000 and 5,100 rpm. Nissan Motors has released the latest sports car model that adds up to the Japanese automaker's extensive lineup of Z models. This time, the new Z model is built by NISMO, the motor sports and performance division of Nissan Motor Company.

The newest addition is the 2007 NISMO 350Z that will roll out in markets starting in July 2007.

The NISMO 350Z features an aggressive front fascia highlighted by the vehicle's chin spoiler. An extended rear fascia with underbody diffuser and a rear wing provides enhanced cornering and handling performance, as well as completing the overall sporty appearance of the 2007 NISMO 350Z. Skoda to arrive in Australia

Skoda leading automaker in Czech Republic and a subsidiary of Volkswagen maker of the unparalleled VW engine part has announced recently that it will return to Australia in October. The basic selling point of Skoda is its prices and this same strategy is what the automaker will also employ in Australia. The prices of Skoda vehicles to be sold in Australia will start from $16,000 for the Fabia and up to the mid $40,000s for the Superb.

And although Skoda vehicles are built using VW engine parts and components it is still 5 to 8 percent cheaper that its equivalent Volkswagen models due to the low-cost production price at Eastern Europe. Volkswagen Group Australia executive this makes the Skoda especially appealing to cost-conscious Australian buyers who wants European cars.

The plan to sell Skoda in Australia has been developed last year, however pricing and local identity issues have delayed the plans. But now since everything has been finally settled the moving is finally moving forward with its plans.

Matthew Weisner Volkswagen Group Australia general manager, press and public relations have been appointed head of Skoda Australia and part of his responsibility is to re-launch the brand. The first Octavia and Roomster are to be sold through 15 VW dealerships. Wiesner also emphasized the Skoda and VW would be distinct even with BMW which sells its Mini brands through associated dealers. "You won't see shared Volkswagen-Skoda showrooms. We've got to give them more separation. Obviously we need to protect what we've done with Volkswagen but at the same time grow the Skoda branding," said Weisner.

But eventually half of VW's 56 dealers nationally will be made to sell Skodas. "By the end of 2008 we'd like to have about 25 dealers. The regional-rural side of the business will be very important, particularly with Skoda's turbo-diesel line-up," added Weisner.

After-sales services are also going to be improved and with the well developed network and highly trained technicians, servicing and logistics is not going to be a problem. Despite the seemed to be flawless sales plan of Volkswagen in Australia, Weisner is still worried that the company's lack of profile may affect the sales turnover. It should be noted that Skodas have not been sold in Australia for almost 25 years.

"We've got to be creative about how we sell the Skoda message. We need to reasonably clever in how we go about it. It's a pretty congested market, so we have to come up with a reasonable answer to the question of why you would consider a Skoda," explained Weisner. He also described himself as"cautious but optimistic" about Skoda.

Presently there 41 different passenger car brands that are fighting to take a slice of the sales pie and Skoda must try to find its way through the ultra competitive market. Another fear of Weisner is that the Skoda may cannibalize VW sales. But then he said, "Yes, we have to be mindful of that. That's why it has taken such a long time to put this together. We need to be very careful how we approach both marques, because there's no point robbing Peter to pay Paul. You get one opportunity to do it properly."

Weisner also admitted that positioning Skoda without affecting the VW sales is one of the challenges that he is facing right now. "We're hoping the Skoda buyer will be an aspirational European buyer who might not have been able to stretch themselves before. They might always have been Japanese buyers who have aspired to Europe and hopefully we'll give them that opportunity," said Weisner.

Last year has been a very good year for VW Group Australia by selling more than 20,000 vehicles and they are hoping that the coming of the Skoda will further help VW Australia to increase their sales.

Daihatsu Copen 1.3-liter Headed for the UK Market

The Daihatsu Copen, a 2-door roadster model from the Japanese car manufacturer is poised to arrive in dealer showrooms all over the United Kingdom. Although the Daihatsu Copen is exclusively sold for the Japanese Kei-car market, UK-based Daihatsu Vehicle Distributors Limited convinced the Japanese automaker to revamp some of the vehicle's components including the small engine with only 660 cc displacement to adapt in the European vehicle standards.

In addition, to comply with the European Whole Vehicle Type Approval, Daihatsu equipped the Copen with a larger 1.3 litre petrol engine that now pumps out an additional 19 hp and a 14.5 lb.-ft. increase of peak torque, for a total of 86 hp at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 88.5 lb ft at 4,400 rpm. Daihatsu said the Copen offers an improved fuel efficiency and low fuel consumption rate, thanks to the advance engine systems like Dynamic Variable Valve Timing (DVVT) which enhances low-speed pulling power, the compact twin overhead camshaft unit equipped with alloy head and block. Moreover, the Daihatsu Copen also comes with the first ever self regenerating catalytic converter made palladium, the most heat sensitive material used in catalytic converters. As a result, the catalytic converter has the ability to regenerate and prolong its function in reducing CO2 exhaust emission coming out from the Daihatsu Copen.

With the new engine, the Daihatsu Copen can now sprint from 0 to 62 mph time in just 9.5 seconds, about 2 seconds faster than the previous 660 cc engine. The Copen roadster can reach an electronically limited full throttle speed of 112 mph.

Mercedes Benz Hoses for a Better Flow

The main purpose of the Mercedes Benz hoses in your vehicle is to see to it that vital fluids keep circulating in the engine parts. Usually, these hoses are made of two rubber layers with a layer of fabric in between. Since they are made of rubbers, they usually deteriorate with age and exposure to heat.

Mercedes Benz hoses generally consist of radiator hose and heater hose (coolant hoses), fuel hose and power steering hose. Each of these has its important role.

The radiator hose provides a flexible connection for coolant flow between the engine and the radiator. There are two kinds of radiator hoses. One is the upper radiator hose and the other one is the lower radiator hose. In order to withstand heat, vibration, pressure, and cooling system chemicals, they are both made typically of reinforced synthetic rubber. Together with the heater hose, they are called as coolant hoses and have the purpose of providing a flexible connection for coolant flow between the engine and the radiator and the engine and the heater core. Ideally, these coolant hoses should be inspected at least twice a year and changed every four years. This is mainly because recent studies show that hoses really begin to break down from the inside out. This process generates fine cracks in the wall of the hose tube and is called electrochemical degradation (ECD). When these fine cracks start to extend from inside the hose tube to the outside, the coolant can then seep through these cracks and attack the hose reinforcement. When this condition is not properly prevented, it will eventually develop into a split, blister or a leak. It is also suggested that you change any hose whenever when you replace a cooling system part that is connected to it.

The power steering hose, on the other hand, connects the power steering pump to the cylinders. This enables your vehicle to turn left and right easily. There are basically two hoses that make up the power steering system. One is the high-pressure hose that is made up of reinforced synthetic compound and has hose fittings that are usually double-flared compression. It carries high-pressure oil from the power steering pump to the steering gear. The low-pressure hose may not use compression fittings because of the lesser amount of pressure that passes through it. It also brings oil from the steering gear back to the pump or its reservoir. Leaks or damages on this hose could result to a loss of power steering assist.

From its name, the fuel hose has the purpose of transporting gasoline from the tank to the engine. The fuel hose is made to withstand gasoline and alcohol, and is reinforced to hold pressure. The reason it needs to be replaced is that the internal flaking of this hose, which releases small pieces of rubber can end up plugging fuel injectors or carburetor circuits.

According to Goodyear, one of the world's best known and trusted tire manufacturers, winter is the time when the inflation of your car's tires drops. This is because the air inside the tire goes down as the temperature around also drops. The company also does say that if the temperature drops to around ten degrees, the tire pressure also goes down by about one to two pounds. If you are not quite so observant about this on your tires, you may be experiencing some tire trouble later on as you do your winter driving.

Bob Toth is the marketing manager of Goodyear for its auto tires and he points out, "Odds are that many motorists haven't checked their tire pressure since the weather began turning colder. If the last time the tire pressure was checked was during the heat of summer, with temperatures around 80 degrees, many people could be riding on severely underinflated tires without realizing it." He also does continue, "Even though consumers can simply and quickly check the air pressure of their tires, it becomes a neglected practice by many. That's too bad, because the four patches of rubber that come in contact with the road surface are vitally important to the performance of the vehicle. They are key for acceleration, lateral traction and braking grip."

To be sure, check your car's tires and make sure that you maintain the required air pressure as specified in your car owner's manual. After all, if you have underinflated tires and you continue on using your vehicle, you would be surprised to find severe tread wear on the outside edges of your tires.

Environment-friendly Concept Car from Volvo: The XC60 Concept

Volvo has been producing safety centered cars for the past 80 years and the company's name is synonymous with road safety and safety systems integrated into their cars. And the company is aiming to add to that their Volvo XC60 Concept Car, though it is still a concept, there is good reason to anticipate a mass produced version of this car. The concept vehicle's powerplant is a six-cylinder, 3.2 liter bio-ethanol engine which can give out 265 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque. All these power is capable enough to drive this car through its competitor if it will be put into production.

The car's in-line engine is the same petrol engine used by the company on their luxury vehicle the S80 in 2006 but designed to take E85 fuel which is 85 per cent bio-ethanol and 15 per cent gasoline. The result is lower emissions and same high performance that buyers expect from a Volvo. Add to that optimized engine the different components like its Volvo exhaust parts that further cleans the gas emitted by the car and you have a car that is a combination of high performance and eco-friendly design.

The use of the E85 as its fuel does not diminish the engine's capability; this can be seen on the car's remarkable acceleration. The car can reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 8.2 seconds and can attain speed as fast as 143 mph.

The possibility of cars such as this looks good thanks to the increasing number of plants producing ethanol for use as fuel. Not only that, the step towards protecting the environment is one of the major concerns of all governments globally so a mass produced green car will be much welcomed. Car manufacturers can expect a large buyer base for cars such as this because of the fuels lower price than the non-renewable fossil fuels. Add to that the performance level of the cars using cleaner fuel and you will have a product that will surely receive much praise and awards and achieve sales record.

Chrysler's Weakness Attracts More Suitors

DaimlerChrysler AG's announcement Wednesday is expected to create a whirl of speculation about who would be interested in the Auburn Hills-based Chrysler. With a large amount of capital available on various markets today, possible suitors could include private equity groups and other automakers. The former could invest heavily in the auto supply sector while the latter could venture on aiming a bigger presence in North America.

The anxious workers were rattled by what DaimlerChrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche said. "In order to optimize and accelerate the presented plan we are looking into further strategic options with partners beyond the business cooperation partners mentioned," Zetsche said. "In this regard, we do not exclude any option. ..."

Renault-Nissan, the Franco-Japanese alliance that pursued an alliance with General Motors Corp. last year, could be one of Chrysler's suitors.

"There are two things working in Chrysler's favor here," said John Casasa, managing partner at New York-based Casesa Strategic Advisors. "There is a great deal of capital out there, and there still are companies that want to establish a presence in North America. Renault-Nissan is the first that comes to mind. One of these Chinese companies could look at Chrysler to get a huge distribution network and established brands, but that might not be realistic at this point."

Another potential suitor is General Motors Corp. A German newspaper earlier reported that DaimlerChrysler is already in talks with GM about a probable deal. When asked about the report, Dieter Zetsche, DaimlerChrysler AG CEO, declined to comment. "Realistically, there are a limited number of potential buyers," said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst of Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.

Nerad added, "It is doubtful that another European-based company would want to acquire the company, and the Japanese companies that are large enough to consider such an acquisition seem to be doing quite well in North America on their own."

However, analysts in the industry are saying that Chrysler's truck-heavy lineup could scare off some potential buyers.

"The same factors that made Chrysler a darling of the public and press as recently as two years ago -- trucks, SUVs and rear-drive sedans -- are the same factors that have hurt its fortunes recently," Nerad said. "Dealing with market swings, like the recent shift to vehicles that offer greater fuel economy, are an important factor in continuing success in the automobile business. Since many Chrysler executives were schooled at Mercedes-Benz, which is less vulnerable to such shifts than a mass-market manufacturer is, it is possible they did not anticipate the critical nature of dealing with change. Now they are dealing with it, but rather painfully."

Had I been inspecting the tires on my Buick a bit more carefully on a certain hot Summer day in 1997, for example, I probably would not have found myself trying to change a tire on the 18 mile long bridge over the Atchafalaya river and swamp in Louisiana as 18-wheelers thundered by just inches away.

So, all year round, increased safety and fuel economy can rest on something as simple as regularly inspecting your tires visually and maintaining proper tire inflation pressure. It is also a good idea to make note somewhere of when tires are purchased, including both date AND mileage. Many of us tend to let such bits of info slide into the background as we drive at top speed with our loved ones on tires which may be nearing the end of their effective, safe lives.

Due to weather changes and road conditions in various areas, additional checks, maintenance, and operations may be called for.

Winter presents unique challenges in some areas and in almost all areas from time to time. Cars may become stuck in snow, roads may become icy, and vehicles may slip and slide at exactly the worst time possible. Winter is NOT a time that you want a tire to fail, so the usual inspections and maintenance become even more important. Properly inflated tires can help maintain traction as well as aiding in regaining control in skids and slides. If stuck in snow, by the way, try to avoid spinning your tires. Many new potholes happen due to a cycle of freezing and thawing of water under the roadway. Potholes can be tire killers at any time of the year, but, because of this cycle, there seems to be more of them after Winter has passed. Often, the damage a pothole inflicts on a tire is invisible, although the damage to the steering may become immediately evident due to the "pulling" of the vehicle to one side or the other, or vibration which wasn't present before.

Obviously, avoiding potholes completely is the best way to protect your tires against damage. However, as we all know, this is not always possible. Here is a tip on how to hit a pothole with minimum damage to your tires. First and foremost, do NOT brake during the impact itself! This creates a solid impact at a given point and will produce the most damage. Instead, brake as much as it is safely possible up to just before impact and release the brakes in time to roll across the pothole. This will result in a rolling contact which produces less damage in most cases.

When deciding on proper inflation pressures, your car manufacturer will usually provide the recommended pressures in the owner's manual and also on a data plate commonly located on the door frame, in the glove compartment, or under the hood. However, aftermarket tires purchased later may require different inflation pressures. In this case, it is good to check with the tire dealer on what would be the best inflation pressures.

Let's think back to that damage the pothole may have done to your steering. It may also have affected the balance of your tires. All of this can affect the life and performance of your tires, and this sort of damage is happening in smaller ways every time you drive your car. Therefore, don't forget to have tires rebalanced and alignment checked if you begin to feel vibration or notice pulling or unusual or uneven tire wear. You also should have tires rebalanced whenever you have your brakes worked on and any other time that it is necessary to unmount and remount your tires.

Last, but not least, a word on tire rotation. Obviously, not all tires are going to experience the same wear at the same time. For this reason, it is usually considered a good idea to periodically rotate tires. Your best bet in most instances is to simply go with the car manufacturer's recommendations, but a rule of thumb might be to rotate tires every 6,000 miles on most cars, and every 4,000 miles on cars with 4-wheel drive.

SAFETY TIP: Avoid tire patch kits that just push an adhesive cord into the puncture. The puncture may have created an opportunity for air to get beneath the tread. The tread could then blow off while you are driving the car, or, as in come cases, it may blow off when the tire is being aired. Injuries have occurred in some of these events. Do not EVER try to patch a puncture in the sidewall.

In these days of high fuel costs, and with the possibility of even higher costs in the future, this is a simple way to improve fuel economy. When you consider that you can also prolong the safe and effective life of your tires as well, you will not only be putting more money in your own pocket but will be helping reduce the power needed to produce more new tires and help reduce America's dependence on foreign oil as well.

Toyota Plant Site Still Unclear

After Toyota has overtaken Daimler-Chrysler in 2006 and took over the third spot in the leader board that lists the biggest auto sellers in the US, it posted a strong start in the 2007 year which puts them on a spot which took them to the second spot from Ford Motor Company this year. Indeed, the Japanese car maker seems like one of their cars pushing ahead with no intention to engage the brakes and they are moving quite fast ahead.

In connection with this, the biggest Japanese car maker is planning to build another plant in the US. But where it will be put up is still uncertain to date.

The planned plant will provide 2,000 jobs aside from the 10,000 jobs that the plant will indirectly provide and it is one of the reasons why the site for the new plant is generating much interest from different areas which are eager to have a plant built on their place. But Toyota is still keeping the plans under cover. The most revealing answer from Toyota comes from the company's spokesman, Dan Sieger, who said that "we are actively looking at sites". The Wall Street Journal though cited Chattanooga, Tenn.; Marion, Ark.; Alamo, Tenn.; and Davidson, N.C. as possible sites for the Toyota plant.

As of now Chattanooga still would not comment on the possible building of a Toyota plant but they already have a 1,600-acre industrial site ready for use. The industrial site is once a part of a former Army TNT plant. Thus, it is labeled as a "brownfield" which means a redeveloped former industrial site. And experts see that it would work against Chattanooga since no Japanese car maker has built a plant on a location such as that. In fact, Michael Randle, the editor and publisher of Southern Business and Development magazine guesses that Toyota would locate their plant in Marion, Ark. instead.

But Tisha Calabrese-Benton, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, stated that the industrial site in Chattanooga has never been categorized as a brownfield. She further added that some cleanup job was done to the site to remove limited areas of contamination. The site is now clean enough that it reaches residential standards, she said. In fact, the site is insured if anything is found there, Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey stated.

Toyota meanwhile said through Sieger that they have located their previously built plants on greenfield locations. Greenfields are actually sites that are either agricultural or undeveloped. He added that while they look at the fact that a site is a greenfield or a brownfield, it is not an absolute prerequisite for a decision on the side of the company. But in no way is this an assurance to Chattanooga that a plant will be located on their turf since auto companies prefer greenfield sites because there is usually but not always adequate space nearby for suppliers. This is what Steven Szalasky, an economist working at the Center for Automotive Research, said.

Toyota is joining the bandwagon of Japanese car makers that are building plants in the Southeastern part of the United States since the labor costs in the said area is relatively lower than other parts of the country. In fact, Tennessee is working hard to attract carmakers to put up plants in the state which would not only help the company save on labor costs but will also help the city in the sense that new jobs will be up for grabs. An example of the commitment of Tennessee to attract car manufacturers to the area is the recent move by Nissan Motor Co. to relocate its North American headquarters to Nashville which was located previously in California.

World's rarest Lambo goes on sale, Volkswagen introduces all new Passat BlueMotion

The acquisition of the world's rarest Lamborghini Bertone Miura Roadster by an American Collector is one that can be considered as a history making sale. Adam Gordon, a New York real estate developer and car collector was the lucky person who bought the Lamborghini's Miura.

The Miura is said to be the most beautiful and undeniably the most desirable post-war sports car ever built for the road. Only 767 Miuras were built between 1967 and 1973. The P400SV now commands prices of up to $800,000. In the year 1968 Lamborghini's factory produced a single Miura Roadster designed by Bertone for the 1968 Brussels Car Show.

The prototype was later presented at car shows throughout the world before it was finally sold to the Boston Museum of Transportation where it remained for many years before it was bought by various prominent collectors. Despite the fact that demands for a production version of the Miura Roadster was overwhelming but still has remained a one-off.

And today the world's only factory Lamborghini Miura convertible has once again makes its way to another collector. Mr. Gordon plans to restore the car to its original 1968 Brussels Salon glory. Gary Bobileff, a renowned Lamborghini restoration specialist is tasked to do the project.

The restoration to be done on the Miura Roadster is not going to be easy since it's going to be a group-up restoration and will require not lesser than two years. It is expected that after the restoration the Miura Roadster will once again become one of the rarest and most valuable classic cars in the world.

Lamborghini historian and author of the soon to be released book "Lamborghini Miura" Joe Sackey says, "This event is automotive history in the making. Consider that Ferrari's ultimate GTO is valued by some in excess of $12 million and even though they have competition heritage, 39 were supposedly made. The Miura Roadster is a true one-off, by comparison, and even though it is not competition inspired, its heritage is that of a "prototype show car" perhaps even more valuable to some collectors."

In other news: In Wolfsburg Germany, Volkswagen, Europe's largest automaker and brand of famous auto parts like Volkswagen heater core is set to unveil the second of what it promised in the extended range of BlueMotion models at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show scheduled next month. The automaker is proud to present its super-frugal version of the sixth-generation Passat capable of running up to 870 miles in between fill-ups.

The new Passat, scheduled to go on sale across Europe later this year would be offered in both sedan and wagon body styles. The vehicle is rumored to achieve a combined city/highway average of 47 mpg which is a 6.6 mpg improvement on the standard Passat model. Such development is brought about by the series of detailed upgrades that are likened to those already seen on the Polo BlueMotion.

Carbon dioxide emissions were also reduced by nearly 10% -- allowing the new Passat to conform to the European Commission's proposed emissions standard for 2008. Other details about the new Passat have not yet been revealed by Volkswagen but Inside Line sources say that the front-wheel-drive of the Passat BlueMotion is powered by a specially tuned version of the automaker's famous 105 HP 1.9 liter four cylinder diesel engine, mated to a six speed manual gearbox.

The new Passat is also given a reworked body shell with aerodynamic upgrades, a new front bumper and grille designed to lessen drag. The other features adopted by the new Passat are low-rolling resistance tires and a reworked gearbox with taller 5th and 6th gears.

2008 Volkswagen R32 to Debut at Chicago Auto Show

If the Volkswagen GTI is considered to be a loud mouthed defensive back and a little hotshot showoff, then the R32 is the automaker's all-pro linebacker. This vehicle is more reserved, not as swift but packed with more muscle.

The R32 has been running the street of Europe for two years now while US is given the GTI which in fairness is a top performing Golf or Rabbit if you prefer. But American buyers are clamoring for the R32 which finally encourage Europe's largest automaker to finally bring the R32 in the US. The R32 is to debut at the Chicago Auto Show.

The R32 is closely identical to the GTI from the outside but the inside and underneath are very different. The GTI is a trim equipped with high quality Volkswagen Golf parts and a single-minded screamer while the R32 takes a more indulgent approach to speed. Another contrasting feature of the R32 with that of the GTI is in terms of its interior which provides a truly luxurious feel and instills in the chassis a greater confidence especially on dicey roads however it is 300 pounds heavier than the GTI.

Custom Parts Might Spoil Auto Stability

Critics in the industry earlier voiced their criticism against custom parts that are allegedly causing some unwanted vehicular incidents. These parts are said to spoil auto stability that further results to vehicle malfunction, accidents and other vehicle problems. This is the reason why several enthusiasts group together and voiced their concern to the federal government. The group urged the latter to ensure that auto add-on auto parts do not spoil car technology.

Millions of vehicles are reported to have malfunctioning electronic stability systems if drivers have customized their vehicles with add-on parts and accessories. This information was divulged by a trade association.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), a Las Vegas-based group of aftermarket manufacturers, said the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's (NHTSA) proposal to mandate that all vehicles be equipped with the anti-rollover technology could prevent owners from customizing their cars and trucks or make the stability system inoperative. Officials of SEMA and NHTSA met to discuss the matter. The association worries that the rule will not ensure that the safety systems are compatible when other equipment is added before or after a vehicle is sold, said Stephen McDonald, SEMA's vice president of government affairs, in a letter to the NHTSA.

"This situation could translate into millions of cars having ESC systems that do not work properly or motorists being denied the opportunity to install aftermarket equipment on their vehicle," McDonald wrote.

Approximately 40 per cent of vehicles on the road have electronic stability control or ESC. The NHTSA said its proposal to require the technology in all vehicles by the year 2012 could save up to 10,600 lives a year and eliminate 80 per cent of single-vehicle rollovers. It expects to issue a final rule by April. This auto issue emerges as the vehicle stability control is becoming more and more popular among consumers. Nowadays, there are even established businesses engaged in customizing vehicles. The said business in not only creating a big wave when, in fact, it is now a remarkable and stable phenomenon. Customizing Volvo accessories may just be treated as a piece of cake by the customization experts.

According to the SEMA, Americans spend about $35 billion annually on modifying and customizing their vehicles with special tires, wheels, suspension systems and other parts. Rae Tyson, NHTSA spokesman, added that the administration is reviewing said auto concerns. "We take any comment to a proposed rulemaking seriously and we'll certainly take it into account," Tyson noted.

One big issue about customization is whether to activate the ESC warning light on the dashboard. "The last thing dealers want is dissatisfied customers running in with the warning light on," said Doug Greehaus, director, of environment, health and safety for the National Automobile Dealers Association. Greehaus participated in the mentioned meeting.

Based on the federal agency's summary of the January 10th meeting, the NHTSA wants "more evidence this is actually a problem." But if a dealer installed equipment on a new car that made ESC inoperative, the vehicle would not meet safety standards, according to the summary.

McDonald said in an interview that SEMA hopes to report back to the NHTSA about the extent of the problem within 30 days. "The challenge is to convince the agency of the extent of the issue, the types of the equipment, the types of safety concerns," he added. "Some of the equipment that is being installed is indicating a problem. We're not sure how big the problem is or if it can be remedied quickly by a software modification."

Different views regarding the matter are voiced by manufacturers. SEMA suggested equipping ESC systems with "adaptive learning" components that sense if a vehicle has different tires, for instance, and adjusts accordingly. Auburn Hills-based Continental Automotive Systems, which produces about 40 per cent of electronic stability control systems in North America, said it does not consider the issue a major concern.

"If you build your own monster truck, you will very likely get an ESC warning light," said Philis Headley, chief engineer for advanced technologies at Continental. But Headley added "it's hard to predict what people could possibly do to their vehicles and what impact that will have."

Headley said there are only a handful of issues to be decided before a final stability control rule is announced, including whether vehicles have to have ESC when traveling in reverse. At present, ESC systems usually do not work when vehicles are operating in reverse.

Alan Adler, GM spokesman said changing tires "could give you a false ESC indicator on a hard turn. We don't have a system to adapt for those things." GM offers several add-on parts that have been designed to work with its own vehicles.
